We were recently featured in Hudson Valley Press for our work on the Environmental Justice Fellowship, a collaboration with the City of Newburgh Conservation Advisory Council and the Greater Newburgh Parks Conservancy. The article highlights the planting of 32 new street trees across all four city wards, led by young Fellows of color who engaged residents, built surveys, and helped identify priority planting locations. This citywide celebration marked a major milestone in expanding Newburgh’s urban tree canopy and advancing environmental health in historically underserved neighborhoods.

At Outdoor Promise, this recognition reinforces the power of community-led environmental stewardship—especially when young leaders are centered in the work. Strengthening Newburgh’s urban tree canopy directly supports environmental justice, improves public health, and increases access to nature for residents who need it most. The Environmental Justice Fellowship demonstrates what can be achieved through strong partnerships, BIPOC leadership development, and long-term investment in local green infrastructure. We invite everyone to support this movement by getting involved, becoming a tree champion, or contributing to our continued efforts.
